Sir Keir Starmer defends plan to improve UK-EU relationship without reversing Brexit

Labour Leader denies claims of wanting to rejoin EU

Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, has refuted allegations that his plan to strengthen ties with the European Union would undermine Brexit. He confirmed that there is "no case for rejoining the EU, its single market, or customs union" and denied suggestions of a second referendum. This comes after Starmer assured leftwing bosses that Labour would "not diverge" from the bloc's rules.

Criticism from Conservative MPs

Tory MPs have accused Starmer of "flip-flopping" on Brexit and orchestrating a backslide. However, Sir Keir maintained that while a Labour government would not lower standards on food or workers' rights, they do want to establish a better relationship with neighboring EU countries. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt expressed concern over aligning UK laws and regulations with those of the EU, stating it would worry Brexit supporters.

Addressing recent controversies

Sir Keir Starmer has faced criticism for his proposed future EU migrant returns deal. He clarified that this would not involve taking a quota of asylum seekers, aiming to debunk claims that it would turn the UK into the "dumping ground" for the bloc.
