Robert Jenrick Accuses Rishi Sunak of Misleading Public Over Rwanda Plan

Former Allies Clash

Rishi Sunak is facing a challenging week as his one-time ally, Robert Jenrick, accuses him of misleading the public over the Rwanda deportation plan. The ex-Immigration Minister claims that the new legislation to kick out small boat migrants will not be effective.

PM's Emergency Legislation Under Fire

Critics of the Prime Minister's bill are questioning whether potential deportees will have the power to personally appeal. This has raised concerns that the system will be bogged down by spurious complaints. However, No10 sources claim that only a small percentage will be able to successfully appeal under the new law.

Jenrick Takes a Stand

Robert Jenrick has made it clear that he will not support the "weak" bill in its current form. He plans to abstain from voting on Tuesday. Other MPs are expected to join him in opposing the legislation or seeking to amend it later. This could push the battle over the UK's relationship with the Strasbourg court into the new year.

Government Response

Michael Gove defended the legislation, describing it as tough and robust. He expressed confidence in Conservative support for the plans and denied any contemplation of a general election if the bill is defeated. However, he did leave the door open to amendments if thoughtful suggestions are put forward.

Labour Opposition

The Labour Party plans to whip its members to vote against the bill. This means that a rebellion by just 28 Tory MPs could defeat the legislation, which is central to Rishi Sunak's scheme.
