Rishi Sunak's U-turn on petrol car ban narrows Labour's lead in the polls

Rishi Sunaks U-turn on petrol car ban narrows Labours lead in the polls

Conservatives gain ground

Rishi Sunak's decision to delay the ban on selling new petrol cars has resulted in a significant boost in the polls for the Conservatives. The Labour lead has been reduced to 16 percentage points, down from 24 points just ten days ago, according to a recent survey. Although still a considerable gap, concerned Tories are finding comfort in the speed and scale of the Prime Minister's comeback.

Survey firm reveals numbers

A survey by Deltapoll found that Labour fell three points to 44, while the Conservatives saw an increase of five points, reaching 28. The poll was conducted over the weekend, immediately after Mr Sunak's decision to push back the Net Zero car deadline from 2030 to 2035.

Approval rating boost for Sunak

Alongside the improved poll numbers, Rishi Sunak also experienced a seven-point increase in his personal approval rating, now at -14. Meanwhile, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer remains ahead with a +9 approval rating. However, experts suggest that Starmer is now on the defensive after expressing his willingness to participate in Europe-wide asylum sharing and his intention to avoid divergence from the EU, undermining the purpose of Brexit.

Conservative MPs praise Sunak's approach

Tory MP Craig Mackinlay highlights the "marked narrowing" in the polls due to the government's more realistic commitments on Net Zero. He also criticizes Sir Keir's confused policies. Former minister Brendan Clarke-Smith commends the Net Zero climbdown, stating that Starmer has shown an inability to handle scrutiny with his inconsistent stance. Conservative vice chairman Lee Anderson suggests that the narrowing poll numbers are a result of policies that resonate with the British public, while also accusing Starmer of intending to legalize illegal immigration and bring the UK back into the EU in all but name.
