Rishi Sunak Warns Cop28 Climate Change Wont Be Tackled Without Public Support

PM Urges Carbon Giants to "Do More" to Reduce Emissions

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the UK, has issued a warning at the Cop28 climate conference in Dubai, stating that climate change cannot be effectively dealt with unless the public is involved. He emphasized that the UK will still meet its net zero targets, but in a way that does not burden working people. Sunak also called on carbon giants to take more action in reducing emissions.

"Climate Politics is Close to Breaking Point"

During his speech, Sunak declared that climate politics is at a "breaking point." He acknowledged the British people's concern for the environment and stressed that the costs of inaction are intolerable. However, he emphasized that there are choices in how to address climate change and that the government will take a more pragmatic approach that does not burden working people.

£11bn Investment in UK's Dogger Bank Wind Farm

Sunak also announced a major deal between two energy firms to invest up to £11bn in the UK's Dogger Bank wind farm. This investment will further support the country's efforts in renewable energy and contribute to achieving net zero targets.

Scrapping Plans on Heat Pumps and Energy Efficiency

The Prime Minister revealed that the government has scrapped plans on heat pumps and energy efficiency, which would have placed a significant financial burden on families. Instead, the focus will be on helping people improve energy efficiency and reduce bills without imposing mandatory measures.

Positive Reception from World Leaders

Sunak stated that during the press conference at the summit, no world leader raised concerns about the UK's decision to water down green targets. He emphasized that most countries have less ambitious targets than the UK, and therefore, there were no objections from other leaders.
