PM Collaborates with Italy, Austria, and Spain to Send Migrants to Rwanda
Rishi Sunak is reportedly working in secret with European allies to tear up rules regarding the processing of migrants, with the intention of sending them to Rwanda. The Prime Minister aims to join forces with Italy's Giorgia Meloni, as well as leaders in Austria and Spain, in an effort to rewrite the European Court of Human Rights charter.
Legal Cover for Sending Migrants to Third Countries
The proposed changes to the European Court of Human Rights charter would provide legal cover for countries to send migrants to third countries for processing. This move is seen as a response to the Supreme Court's recent ruling that the Government's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda was unlawful.
Emergency Legislation and New Treaty with Kigali
Downing Street is planning to introduce emergency legislation and negotiate a new treaty with Rwanda's capital, Kigali, in order to address the issues raised by the Supreme Court's judgment. The Prime Minister, accused by former Home Secretary Suella Braverman of "tinkering" with the original scheme, has expressed his determination to ensure that domestic courts cannot systematically block deportation flights.
Challenging Labour to Support the Legislation
Rishi Sunak has challenged the Labour Party to support the proposed legislation, especially in the House of Lords. He emphasized the need for cooperation in order to swiftly pass the bill and make the Rwanda plan a reality. However, former Supreme Court judge Lord Sumption criticized the idea of declaring Rwanda safe as "profoundly discreditable," arguing that it would effectively overrule the Supreme Court's decision.
