Rishi Sunak Axes Manchester Leg of HS2, Bans Youngsters Smoking, and Scraps A-Levels in Radical PM Speech

Rishi Sunak Axes Manchester Leg of HS2, Bans Youngsters Smoking, and Scraps A-Levels in Radical PM Speech

HS2 Manchester Leg Ditched

Rishi Sunak, the UK's Chancellor of the Exchequer, made a bold announcement at the Tory conference speech. He revealed that the Manchester leg of the high-speed rail project HS2 has been axed. Sunak argued that the multi-billion-pound project no longer serves its purpose and that taxpayers' money could be spent more effectively elsewhere. Instead, the £36 billion earmarked for the Manchester leg will be invested in "Network North," a plan to develop and upgrade road, rail, bus, and train projects across the North and Midlands.

Banning Smoking for Young People

In a move to prioritize the next generation, Sunak also announced plans to ban cigarettes for young people. Under this ban, a 14-year-old today will never be able to legally purchase cigarettes. The decision comes as smoking costs the country a staggering £17 billion per year, according to the PM. Sunak believes that this ban will save more lives than any other decision the Conservative Party could make. The ban is expected to pass in the Commons, as it will be a free vote for all MPs.

Strike at NHS

Sunak did not shy away from addressing the ongoing pay dispute with BMA doctors. He criticized the doctors' demand for "massive unaffordable pay rises" and highlighted that their decision to strike is politically motivated, rather than driven by their concerns for patients.

Tax Cuts and Economy

The Chancellor promised tax cuts, although he did not provide a specific timeline. Sunak emphasized the need for inflation to decrease before tax reductions can be implemented. He acknowledged that the public desires tax cuts, as it would ease the cost of living.

Labour and Brexit

Sunak launched a scathing attack on Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, calling him a "walking definition of the 30-year political status quo." The PM accused Starmer of wanting to bring the UK back under Brussels rules and of being anti-Brexit. Sunak emphasized his commitment to not let Britain be bullied by extremist trans activists and reiterated his belief in a binary gender system.

Personal Touch

Prior to Rishi Sunak taking the stage, his wife, Akshata Murty, surprised conference attendees by delivering a personal speech. Dressed in a pink power suit, she spoke about her love for the PM and the challenges they faced during their years of long-distance relationship. Murty praised Sunak's character, honesty, integrity, and zest for life.
