Outrage as 200 bike thefts go unsolved every day

Shocking stats reveal alarming number of bike thefts

Around 200 bike thefts are going unsolved every day, according to shocking statistics. Over the past five years, a staggering 365,709 cases of bike theft have gone unresolved, making up a whopping 89 percent of all reported incidents.

Only 2% of bike thefts result in charges

Adding to the dismay, just two percent of bike thefts have led to suspects being charged. This alarming data was compiled by the Liberal Democrats, who analyzed official figures. The party has accused authorities of essentially decriminalizing this type of crime.

"Effectively decriminalized"

Alistair Carmichael, the Home Affairs spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, expressed his concern over the figures, stating: "These shocking statistics will undoubtedly raise questions about whether bike theft has been effectively decriminalized. Whether it's for commuting, family outings, or exercise, bikes are cherished possessions for many people."

Victims left feeling helpless

Being a victim of bike theft can leave individuals feeling not only financially burdened but also distressed. The knowledge that the thief is likely to get away with the crime only adds insult to injury. "Knowing the thief will probably get away with it just adds salt into the wound," Carmichael added.

Politicians clash over crime prevention

In response to the Liberal Democrats' findings, Policing Minister Chris Philp criticized the party's stance on crime prevention, stating: "The Liberal Democrats could never be trusted to cut crime or keep communities safe. They want to strip our police officers of vital powers and voted against tougher sentences for the worst offenders."

Conservatives tout crime reduction achievements

Philp went on to defend the Conservative party's track record in reducing theft offenses, including bicycle theft. He highlighted a 47 percent decrease in theft offenses since 2010 and a 54 percent reduction in bicycle theft specifically. Philp also emphasized the party's efforts in reducing violent crime by 52 percent and increasing the number of police officers on the streets.
