Law to Ban Trans and Gay Conversion Therapy Faces Setback Amid Tory Mutiny

Law to Ban Trans and Gay Conversion Therapy Faces Setback Amid Tory Mutiny

Over 40 Tory MPs Sign Letter Opposing Proposed Bill

Plans to ban trans and gay conversion therapy in the UK have hit a roadblock as a revolt by furious Tory MPs gains momentum. Over 40 Conservative Members of Parliament have signed a letter urging Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to abandon the proposed law, which would criminalize institutions offering conversion therapy.

Fear of Unintended Consequences

While the intention behind the ban is to protect vulnerable individuals, MPs warn that it could inadvertently criminalize parents and teachers for expressing their views on gender identity. They argue that telling their children not to change genders could be unfairly penalized under the proposed legislation.

No Law Before the Election

According to a senior government source, the law banning conversion therapy is unlikely to be passed before the next election. The Prime Minister will instead publish a draft Bill for pre-legislative scrutiny, which will extend the timeline and push the law's enactment beyond the upcoming winter election.

Mixed Reactions Within the Conservative Party

Conservative MP Miriam Cates is among those opposing the ban. She believes that criminalizing parents for discussing gender identity with their children, such as advising against puberty blockers, would be dangerous. Several MPs from the New Conservative group and the Common Sense Group have also signed the letter, including some with government positions.

A Potential Revolt

Tory MPs who oppose the conversion therapy ban have warned Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of a potential revolt if he continues to push for the legislation. They are adamant that they will not support such a ban under any circumstances.

Downing Street has declined to comment on the contents of the King's Speech, which will be delivered next month.
