Johnny Mercer Urges Tory MPs to Support Rishi Sunak to Avoid Labour Victory

Veterans Minister Calls for Unity in Conservative Party

Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer has issued a plea to fellow Tory MPs to rally behind Chancellor Rishi Sunak, warning that failure to do so could result in a victory for Labour in the upcoming election. Mercer emphasized the importance of pulling together for the sake of the country.

Infighting Over Prime Minister's Immigration Legislation

The call for unity comes after a week of intense infighting within the Conservative Party over the Prime Minister's emergency legislation regarding the deportation of illegal migrants to Rwanda. Although Sunak successfully navigated the bill's first Commons' hurdle, he faces opposition from right-wing factions and the left-leaning One Nation group in the new year.

Public Demand for Discipline and Dedication

Mercer stressed that the public expects to see discipline, dedication, and duty from the party in government. He argued that the Prime Minister embodies these values and it is the duty of MPs to support him both within the Cabinet and across the party.

Scrutinizing the Labour Party

In addition to urging support for Sunak, Mercer called on his colleagues to scrutinize the Labour Party, stating that the more they examine it, the worse it looks. He highlighted the lack of plans and provisions for veterans in the opposition party, emphasizing the serious implications for the country.

Hotline for Homeless Veterans

Mercer also announced the launch of a hotline for homeless veterans. The scheme, known as Op Fortitude, aims to tackle homelessness within the veteran community. Since its launch in July, the initiative has already referred 400 individuals for assistance. Mercer expressed his commitment to ensuring that no veterans sleep rough during the Christmas season.

Changing Lives and the Toll of Politics

Reflecting on his work, Mercer described it as a "huge privilege" and acknowledged the toll that politics can take. However, he emphasized the importance of meeting and helping individuals in need, stating that it is their lives that make the challenges of politics worth enduring.
