Is the Manchester Leg of HS2 Being Scrapped to Fix Potholes? Rishi Sunak Hints at Possible Shift in Priorities

Is the Manchester Leg of HS2 Being Scrapped to Fix Potholes? Rishi Sunak Hints at Possible Shift in Priorities

In a recent series of regional interviews, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declined to commit to completing the full HS2 rail project, suggesting that the funds could be used to address more pressing issues, such as fixing pot holes. This move has raised concerns about the future of the Manchester leg of HS2.

Rishi Sunak Denies Betraying Northerners Despite HS2 Uncertainty

Although Rishi Sunak denied betraying northerners, he argued that more people use cars than trains, suggesting that a reprioritization of funds towards road infrastructure could benefit a larger portion of the population. He emphasized the importance of "value for money" over the completion of HS2 to Manchester.

The Prime Minister also highlighted his commitment to investing in infrastructure and delivering on his "levelling up" agenda, focusing on improving town centers, high streets, and maintaining well-functioning road networks.

Connection and Local Transport: Sunak's Argument

Rishi Sunak stressed the significance of connecting all the towns and cities in the North, mentioning Hull, York, Leeds, Sheffield, and Liverpool as crucial destinations. He insisted that investments in local transport, such as filling potholes and improving bus services, were particularly important for the rural areas.

HS2's Cost and Purpose Under Scrutiny

Concerns about the cost of HS2 have been raised, with rail chiefs suggesting that the final bill for the project could reach £180 billion. Lord Berkley, a former deputy chair of the government's HS2 review, expressed the need for a significant reduction in costs and a "repurposing" of the rail line to better connect the cities in the North.

Potential Plans to Scale Back or Delay HS2

Plans to scale back or delay the HS2 project are expected to be announced in November's Autumn Statement following a backlash. The issue is set to dominate the upcoming Tory Party conference, which begins this Sunday in Manchester. Rail strikes have prompted the Prime Minister to announce that he will drive to the city instead of taking the train.

HS2 Phase One Continues, But Manchester Leg Uncertain

Rishi Sunak emphasized that the "phase one" of HS2 is being actively pursued, with work already underway to complete the line from Birmingham to Central London. However, it remains unclear whether the Manchester leg will proceed as planned.
