Illegal migrants must be stopped from ‘shopping around’ for preferred new country, says Suella Braverman

The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has called for a crackdown on illegal migration and a shake-up of UN rules to prevent asylum-seekers from "shopping around" for their preferred new country.

Blueprint for an international effort

In a speech she will deliver today in the US, Braverman will lay out a blueprint for an international effort to tackle illegal migration. One of the key proposals is to give up refugee status for those who travel through multiple safe countries.

Seeking asylum vs economic prospects

Braverman will emphasize the distinction between seeking asylum and seeking better economic prospects. She will argue that asylum-seekers should not be treated the same as those who are simply looking for economic opportunities in a different country.

Questioning the UN Refugee Convention

In her speech, Braverman will question the relevance of the UN Refugee Convention 1951 in the modern age. She will suggest that it may be in need of reform to address the current challenges of illegal migration.

Passing through safe countries

Braverman will argue that the majority of migrants crossing the English Channel from France have already passed through multiple safe countries. Therefore, there is an argument that they should no longer be treated as refugees.

Challenges of the current system

Furthermore, Braverman will insist that it is unsustainable to have a system where simply being gay or a woman qualifies for protection. This highlights the need to evaluate the criteria for granting refugee status.
