Home Secretary James Cleverly Apologizes for Insulting Labour MP in Commons

Apology for "Unparliamentary Language"

Home Secretary James Cleverly has issued an apology after referring to a Labour MP as a "s***" in the House of Commons. Cleverly had faced pressure to apologize after it was alleged that he had also used the term to describe the MP's constituency.

Apology Directed at MP, Not Constituency

A source close to the Home Secretary clarified that Cleverly's comment was directed at the MP and not the constituency. The source stated that Cleverly called Alex Cunningham a "s*** MP" and apologized for using "unparliamentary language." It was emphasized that Cleverly has campaigned in Stockton and has a positive view of the area.

Pressure Mounts for Apology

Pressure on Cleverly to apologize for his remarks about Stockton started to mount after fellow Tory Lord Ben Houchen, the Tees Valley Mayor, called on him to say sorry. However, Lord Houchen welcomed Cleverly's apology, acknowledging that the speculation had harmed the name of Stockton.

Confidence from Number 10

Despite the controversy, Number 10 confirmed that Chancellor Rishi Sunak continues to have confidence in Home Secretary James Cleverly.

MP Doubts Apology

Labour MP Alex Cunningham, who was the target of Cleverly's insult, expressed doubt about the sincerity of the apology. Cunningham asserted that Cleverly should come to the Commons and apologize directly to the people of Stockton. He also questioned Cleverly's fitness for high office, stating that colleagues who witnessed the incident believe he used the offensive expression.
