Home Sec Calls for Law Change in UK Asylum System

Suella Braverman Criticizes Small Boat Migrants

The UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has declared that individuals crossing from France to the UK by small boat are not "fleeing imminent peril" and have no "good cause" for entering the country. In a keynote address in Washington DC, Braverman called for a reevaluation of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention and criticized global asylum rules for facilitating illegal migration.

Outdated Refugee Convention Fuels European Crisis

Braverman argues that the UN Refugee Convention, once an "incredible achievement," is now outdated and no longer fit for our modern age. She suggests that the convention, along with the way it has been interpreted through courts, has allowed individuals to travel through multiple safe countries and pick their preferred destination to claim asylum, leading to an absurd and unsustainable situation.

Seeking Asylum vs Economic Prospects

According to Braverman, seeking asylum and seeking better economic prospects should not be treated as the same thing. She believes it is unsustainable to offer protection based solely on gender or sexual orientation, emphasizing the need for a reassessment of the asylum system.

Controlled Borders and Upholding Human Rights

Braverman argues that it is imperative for states to have the power to control their own borders. She dismisses the notion that a country must be part of an international human rights organization to respect human rights. Furthermore, she warns that uncontrolled migration can lead to social issues, emphasizing that multiculturalism has failed in Britain.

Influx of Small Boats Linked to Increased Criminality

The Home Secretary revealed that UK police chiefs have informed her about the rise in criminal activity, such as drug crimes, exploitation, and prostitution, associated with the recent influx of small boats arriving in Britain. Braverman argues that individuals who choose to enter the UK illegally from safe countries have already demonstrated contempt for the law.
