UN Accuses Government of Being Too Tough on Dangerous Eco-Yobs
The United Nations (UN) has faced widespread criticism in Westminster after its officials accused the UK government of being too harsh on eco-protesters. MPs have condemned the UN as "daft" and argued that its focus should be on foreign tyrants rather than "spoilt" protestors.
Outrage Over UN Special Rapporteur's Remarks
UN Special Rapporteur Ian Fry sparked fury in Westminster with his comments, accusing the government of being too lenient on eco-activists. In a letter to ministers, Fry claimed that long sentences for eco-protesters could suppress freedom of speech and protest. However, his remarks have been met with scathing criticism from MPs who argue that he does not have to face the consequences of disruptive protests.
Protesters Jailed for Causing Public Nuisance
In 2022, two activists from the group Just Stop Oil, Morgan Trowland and Marcus Decker, were sentenced to three and two years respectively for causing a public nuisance. The pair scaled the Dartford Crossing Bridge for nearly 40 hours, causing severe traffic congestion.
MPs Slam UN's Interference
MPs have strongly condemned the UN's interference in UK affairs. Former Home Secretary Priti Patel criticized the organization, stating that the public is outraged by the selfish actions of Just Stop Oil and the disruption they cause. Other MPs echoed this sentiment, arguing that the UN should focus on challenging despotic regimes rather than championing the causes of activists.
UN Officials Face Previous Criticism
This is not the first time UN officials have faced backlash from
UK
lawmakers. In 2014, a UN housing rapporteur drew the ire of then-DWP Secretary Sir Iain Duncan Smith after criticizing welfare reforms. Some MPs argue that these interventions by UN officials add no value to the debate and only serve to support protesters.
UK Government Stands Firm
The UK government has stood firm in response to the UN's criticism. Sir Iain Duncan Smith stated that the whole idea of Special Rapporteurs should be scrapped, as their reports are always biased in favor of protesters. He emphasized that the sentences handed down to disruptive protesters were justified and hoped that others would face similar consequences. Other MPs echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for the UN to stay out of UK affairs. In conclusion, the UN's criticism of the UK government's handling of eco-protesters has sparked fury among MPs. The government and many lawmakers argue that the UN should not interfere in UK affairs and should focus on more pressing global issues.
