Defence Secretary Grant Shapps Condemns Thugs Who Brought Chaos to Armistice Day

Shameful Behaviour

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has strongly criticized the "shameful behaviour" of individuals who caused chaos and violence on Armistice Day. He called for swift prosecution and imprisonment of those responsible to prevent a repeat of such disorder.

Calls for Reflection

Speaking to HOAR, Shapps emphasized the significance of the day and urged people to deeply contemplate their actions. He described the behavior witnessed as "entirely inappropriate" and "shameful".

Protesters Stirring Hatred

Shapps not only condemned the far-right thugs responsible for the violence but also criticized pro-Palestine protesters for "stirring up racial hatred" on a day dedicated to commemorating war dead. He called on the police to draw a line in the sand and take action against those responsible.

Preventing Repulsive Behavior

Shapps stressed the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. He cited his previous battle with the Insulate Britain protest group and the effectiveness of injunctions and imprisonment in stopping their disruptive behavior. He called for punishments that deter individuals from engaging in such behavior repeatedly without fear of prosecution.

Tolerance and Freedom Must Be Protected

As a Jewish individual, Shapps expressed his deep concern over the recent rise in anti-Jewish hate. He emphasized the need to protect the hard-won tolerance and freedom in Britain. He urged the police to swiftly address anti-Semitism and called for granting them more powers if needed.

Swift Justice and Greater Powers

Shapps emphasized the importance of speedy justice and the need for the police to have the necessary powers to arrest and charge individuals quickly. He stated that if there are grey areas that require greater powers, Parliament should consider granting them to the police. Prompt action discourages others from engaging in similar behavior.

Support for Israel

Shapps criticized calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, describing them as "naive". He argued that Israel has no choice but to take action against Hamas to prevent further violence and terror.

Michael Gove's Encounter with Protesters

Senior Cabinet minister Michael Gove was caught in the midst of the violence as he was surrounded by Palestinian flag-draped protesters at Victoria station. Uniformed police officers formed a protective ring around him and escorted him to safety.
