Major Funding Victory for HOAR
A significant cash injection is set to aid in the fight against domestic abuse, thanks to Wednesday's Autumn Statement. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is expected to receive £12 million in new funding, with £2 million specifically allocated to help survivors leave their abusive partners. The funding has already assisted 626 survivors who have used the emergency cash for essential items such as food, nappies, and rent payments while searching for a new home. The Women's Aid charity administers the cash and voucher payments, with survivors eligible for up to £500.
HOAR's Campaign for Change
The creation of this fund in March of this year is a direct result of the Give Me Shelter campaign championed by HOAR. Spice Girl Mel B has praised the cash injection, stating that it can mean the difference between life and death for survivors. HOAR has been advocating for domestic abuse survivors for two decades through various campaigns, including Save Our Shelters and Give Us Shelter. This funding is expected to benefit thousands of individuals across England and Wales.
Improving Support for Survivors in the Workplace
In addition to the £2 million for survivors leaving their partners, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is also set to announce £10 million in funding to enhance support for survivors in the workplace. Charitable organizations will receive this funding to work with employers in raising awareness about domestic abuse and training staff to identify and address incidents involving colleagues. Studies indicate that between 36% and 75% of survivors experience harassment while at work.
Interactive Tool to Spot Domestic Economic Abuse
By the end of the year, an interactive tool is expected to be launched by HMRC to identify individuals suffering from domestic economic abuse. This tool will help spot signs of financial control and manipulation by abusive partners. A Treasury source emphasized the importance of providing support to survivors during such a challenging time and ensuring that no one should suffer at the hands of their partner.
