In a heartrending incident, two young men died in a drowning accident off the coast of Devon. The tragedy unfolded on Saturday, the warmest day of the year thus far, near the picturesque seaside locale of Oddicombe, Torbay.
Authorities were alerted to the situation when reports about two individuals struggling in the water came in. A swift emergency response was initiated, involving the Torbay Coastguard Rescue Team, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), and an air ambulance.
Despite the rescue teams' rapid response and concerted efforts, one of the men was pronounced dead at the scene. The second man was rushed to Torbay District Hospital, where he tragically passed away despite the best efforts of medical staff.
The Devon and Cornwall Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. A comprehensive report will be submitted to the coroner in due course. The bereaved families of the two men have been notified of the devastating event.
This tragic incident occurred on the hottest day of 2023, with UK temperatures soaring to 24C (75F). In a separate, unrelated incident in Carlisle, a teenager lost his life in a river after a group of friends found themselves in trouble in the water.
The 15-year-old, identified as Lewis Michael Kirkpatrick, was located on Saturday afternoon following an extensive search operation. Another boy, aged 14, is in critical condition in the hospital.
