Holy crap, did anyone else just witness that?! I was literally standing in my living room screaming at my TV as Luke Littler pulled off what we've all been waiting for. The kid has FINALLY done it - five nightly wins in a Premier League season. Nobody has ever managed that before. Not MVG in his prime, not Wright, nobody.
I've been following darts since 2018 when my cousin dragged me to a local tournament, and I've never seen anything like this teenage phenomenon. Littler's path to victory tonight wasn't exactly smooth sailing though.
Squeaking Past Bunting By The Skin Of His Teeth
The quarterfinal against Stephen Bunting nearly gave me a heart attack. Seriously. My neighbor texted me during teh match asking if I was okay because apparently I was yelling loud enough for the whole building to hear.
Littler scraped through 6-5 in what felt like the longest match of my life. There were moments when I thought he was done for, especially when Bunting hit that 180 in the eighth leg. But somehow the wonderkid pulled it back.
Another Nail-Biter Against "The Asp"
Then came Aspinall in the semis.
Same story, different opponent. Another 6-5 victory that had me pacing around my apartment. I actually knocked over my coffee during the deciding leg. $4 worth of caffeine sacrificed to the darts gods, but worth every penny.
The way Littler handles pressure at his age is just... I don't even have words. When I was his age I could barely handle the pressure of ordering at McDonald's without stuttering.
Wait, Is MVG About To Crush The Dream?
The final started and I thought it was all going to fall apart. Van Gerwen raced to a two-leg lead and had that look in his eye. You know the one. That "I'm about to destroy your hopes and dreams" look that MVG has perfected over the years.
My mate Dave (who's been backing MVG all season) sent me a smug "told you so" message that I was fully prepared to delete from my phone and pretend I never received.
But then...
The Comeback That Made History
Listen. What happened next was ridiculous. Littler flipped some invisible switch and suddenly started playing like a man possessed. The Dutch superstar couldn't keep up.
I've watched Van Gerwen dominate this sport for years, and seeing him look genuinely rattled by a teenager... it's like watching your invincible older brother get beaten at something for the first time. Kinda shocking, but also weirdly satisfying?
By the time Littler hit the winning double, I'd already called my dad (who got me into darts back in the day). His response: "I'm already updating the family record books." Dad humor, I swear...
So Where Were You When It Happened?
If you missed it live, I feel sorry for you. This was one of those "I was there when" sporting moments. The night started at 7:15pm BST and Sky Sports Action captured every glorious moment. I'm probably gonna rewatch it tomorrow on NOW TV just to make sure I didn't dream the whole thing.
God. What a night for darts.
And what a season for Littler. From runner-up at the World Championship to breaking records in the Premier League... all before he's even old enough to celebrate with a proper pint. There's something not quite fair about that level of talent.
But that's sports for you. Sometimes a generational talent comes along and all you can do is sit back and enjoy the show.
