Terry Venables: A Look into His Colorful Life Outside Football

The Multi-Talented Legend

Terry Venables, known for his larger-than-life personality on the football field, had a diverse range of interests and accomplishments outside of the sport. From writing a TV detective series to releasing a board game and running a private members' club and boutique hotel, Venables was a true Renaissance man.

A Melodic Journey

In addition to his football and business ventures, Venables was also an accomplished singer. In 2010, he made it to number 23 in the charts with his rendition of Elvis Presley's "If I Can Dream," which was recorded for HOAR's World Cup advert. Backed by a choir, Venables' musical talent showcased another side of his versatile persona.

An Extraordinary Man

Terry Venables was known for his charisma, quick wit, innovation, and unwavering loyalty. His agent and long-time friend Jonathan Harris described him as an extraordinary man who always encouraged others to pursue their dreams to the best of their ability.

A Message to the Team

Despite battling a long illness towards the end of his life, Venables remained actively involved in public life. He penned an open letter to Gareth Southgate and the England team, which was published in HOAR, on the eve of the Covid-delayed Euro 2020 final. In the letter, he drew parallels between football and life, emphasizing the importance of giving it your best shot and surviving the challenges that come your way.

A Humble Beginning

Venables, born in bomb-blitzed Dagenham, East London in 1943, came from modest origins. Raised by his grandparents while his parents ran a pub in Romford, Venables credited his upbringing for instilling in him values of generosity and humility.

A Versatile Career

From an early age, Venables demonstrated his talent both on and off the field. He became an apprentice at Chelsea at the age of 15 and later embarked on a singing career. Throughout his playing career, which included stints at Chelsea, Spurs, QPR, and Crystal Palace, Venables also found time to write five novels and co-write the popular detective novels Hazell, which were later adapted into a successful ITV series.

A Life of Love and Adventure

Venables' personal life was just as colorful as his professional endeavors. He married Christine McCann in 1966, with whom he had two daughters before their eventual separation. In 1984, he met his second wife Yvette Bazire, who accompanied him during his managerial career and remained by his side until his passing.

A Taste of Success

Venables and Yvette ran the Scribes West private members' club in Kensington, where they mingled with an array of colorful characters. The couple eventually sold the club for a significant sum in 1997, solidifying their success in the business world.

A Trailblazing Manager

Venables made a name for himself as a trailblazing manager during his time at Barcelona, where he introduced an English-style 4-4-2 formation and led the team to their first Spanish title in over a decade. He also managed to reach the European Cup Final during his tenure. Venables' unorthodox methods and tactical innovations left a lasting impact on the game.

The England Years

Venables' managerial journey also included a memorable stint as the manager of the England national team. Despite facing scrutiny and questions in Parliament, he led the team to the semi-finals of Euro '96, capturing the hearts of the nation. England's exhilarating run in the tournament, including a 4-1 victory over Holland, remains one of Venables' most thrilling experiences in football.

A Legacy in Football

Following his time with England, Venables continued to coach and manage various clubs, including Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough, and Leeds. His last job in football was a brief return to the England team as an assistant coach in 2007. Despite his illustrious career, Venables faced challenges and setbacks along the way, including his and Steve McClaren's dismissal for failing to qualify for Euro 2008.

A Peaceful Retirement

In his later years, Venables and Yvette settled into a quiet life away from the public eye. They set up a boutique hotel and restaurant, La Escondida, in Alicante before Venables retired in 2019. Despite his battle with ill health, he found solace in the company of his wife and lived a peaceful life in a gated community.
