Sky Sports and TNT Sports Face Competition for Premier League Coverage as Rival Bidder Emerges

Rival Bidder Threatens Sky Sports and TNT Sports

Sky Sports and TNT Sports, the long-standing broadcasters of Premier League games, are facing competition from a rival bidder for coverage of the highly anticipated matches. According to reports from the Telegraph, the broadcasting duo may potentially lose their majority share of Premier League games.

Amazon's Bid for a Larger Chunk of Televised Games

It has been revealed that Amazon is exploring the possibility of acquiring a larger portion of the televised games offered to broadcasters. While Prime Video already broadcasts 20 games per season, they are expected to bid for match packages that would grant them the rights to a significantly higher number of fixtures. This would mark a substantial increase from the rights Amazon currently possesses.

Potential Impact on TNT Sports and Sky Sports

If Amazon is successful in their bid, they could potentially televise more games than TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport), which currently holds the rights to 52 games per season. However, despite the emergence of this rival bidder, TNT Sports and Sky Sports are still considered the favorites to retain the majority of Premier League fixtures for future seasons.

Other Streaming Services Eyeing Premier League Broadcasting Rights

Amazon may not be the only streaming service vying for the Premier League broadcasting rights. Online service DAZN is also expected to consider acquiring one of the less expensive packages available.

Next Round of Packages and Duration of Rights

The upcoming round of packages will span three years, and successful bids will secure broadcasting rights for that extended period.

Positive News for Football Fans

Currently, 270 out of the Premier League's 380 annual games are available for broadcast. Fortunately for football fans, there are no planned changes to the kick-off times. The Saturday 12.30pm and 5.30pm, Sunday 2pm and 4.30pm, and Monday or Friday 8pm slots are reportedly set to remain the same.
