REFS Chief Warned: Stockley Park VAR Complex a Waste of Money

Premier League Referees Upset with VAR Decisions

The chief of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), Howard Webb, has been warned that Stockley Park, the "elite performance" VAR complex in London, is a massive waste of money. The state-of-the-art facility, which cost over £1 million, opened in August and was meant to provide the best possible environment for referees to make accurate decisions.

Facilities at Stockley Park Criticized

Despite the luxurious amenities at Stockley Park, including a private gym, conference rooms, top-of-the-range furniture, and a lounge area, many Premier League managers, including Mikel Arteta, Jurgen Klopp, Erik ten Hag, David Moyes, and Gary O’Neil, have expressed their dissatisfaction with video assistant referee (VAR) decisions this season. Former top referee Mark Halsey criticized the facilities, stating that referees and officials should have a workplace focused on their job, rather than rest and relaxation.

VAR's Failings Not Due to Technology, But Personnel

According to Halsey, the problem with VAR lies not in the technology itself, but in the personnel operating it. He believes that the money spent on facilities at Stockley Park should instead be invested in better coaching and training for referees. Halsey argues that the standard of refereeing at the elite level is not up to par and that better relationships between referees and VARs could improve decision-making.

Controversial VAR Decisions Spark Outrage

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta are among those who have publicly criticized VAR decisions. Klopp demanded a replay after VAR wrongly ruled out a goal against Tottenham, while Arteta called for an officiating shake-up following a controversial goal by Newcastle. Other former referees, including Dermot Gallagher, Keith Hackett, Mark Clattenburg, and Chris Foy, also criticized VAR's decisions in these incidents.

Improvements Needed for VAR

Halsey and others have called for better training and communication among VAR officials. They argue that close-up camera angles and more comprehensive reviews should be used to ensure accurate decisions. Halsey believes that VARs should be based at the stadiums, working alongside the on-field officials to build better relationships and improve the decision-making process.

Overall, the criticism of Stockley Park and its facilities highlights the ongoing challenges and controversies surrounding VAR in the Premier League.
