Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana to play in Africa Cup of Nations despite concerns

Little-known rule forces Onana's participation

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has made the decision to participate in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, despite concerns about his form and long-term future at the club. A little-known FIFA rule meant that Onana would have been banned from playing for United if he had declined the call-up. United had been in negotiations with the Cameroon FA in the hopes of keeping Onana available for club duty, but ultimately, the goalkeeper couldn't turn his back on his country.

Onana's previous retirement and return

Onana had retired from international football after being kicked out of Cameroon's World Cup camp in 2022 due to a conflict with coach Rigobert Song. However, he reversed his decision in September and played in the win over Burundi, securing Cameroon's place in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Concerns about his future at United

Onana's decision to participate in the tournament comes with concerns about his position at Manchester United. The goalkeeper has faced criticism for his performance, with a number of high-profile blunders leading to questions about his spot in the team. On-loan player Sofyan Amrabat will also be absent from the United squad during the tournament, further adding to the team's challenges.

Positive news for United

Despite the absences, Manchester United has received some positive news on the injury front. Influential player Lisandro Martinez is recovering well from a metatarsal problem, while Mason Mount and Casemiro are also expected to return to full training soon. Defenders Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof should be available next month as well.
