Rejected Proposal for a New Home
Liverpool's stadium looks unrecognisable in plans that were rejected by the council. The Reds had unveiled a proposal for a new home near Anfield back in 2007.
A Futuristic Ground in Stanley Park
Former owners Tom Hicks and George Gilette backed plans to construct a 60,000-capacity stadium in nearby Stanley Park. Designs for the project were released, showing a futuristic ground that was a world away from Anfield's iconic appearance.
Plans Put on Ice
Despite the initial excitement, the plans were put on ice after meetings with Liverpool City Council and US architects HKS. Hicks and Gilette later sold the club to Fenway Sports Group and the prospect of a new stadium was shelved.
Renovation and Upgrades at Anfield
Instead of building a new stadium, the current owners have focused on renovating and upgrading Anfield. The Main Stand was completed in 2016, and the Anfield Road Stand has also undergone a makeover, raising the ground's capacity to 61,000.

Delayed Opening of the Anfield Road Stand
Work on the extension of the Anfield Road Stand began in 2021, with hopes of a full re-opening for the current campaign. However, the top tier of the stand remains closed, and the full opening has been pushed back until the new year.
Other Shelved Proposals
Hicks and Gilette's plans for a Stanley Park stadium are not the only ones that were shelved. In 2010, designs were released for a 'Siamese stadium' that would house both Liverpool and city rivals Everton. However, both sets of owners opted not to pursue the proposals.
Despite the rejected plans, Liverpool's stadium may have a different look in the future as the club continues to explore options for expansion and development.
