Kasper Schmeichel 'thrown Premier League lifeline' with Leicester title winner 'open' to stunning transfer return

Kasper Schmeichel thrown Premier League lifeline with Leicester title winner open to stunning transfer return

Sheffield United interested in signing Kasper Schmeichel

Kasper Schmeichel, the former Premier League champion, could be making a return to the English top flight with Sheffield United, according to reports. Schmeichel left England in 2022 when he joined Nice from Leicester. However, his stint in France did not go as planned, leading to his release in September after making 46 appearances for the Ligue Un side. The 37-year-old goalkeeper then signed a one-year deal with Anderlecht. Despite only keeping two clean sheets in his 13 appearances for the Belgian club, Schmeichel may be enticed by the opportunity to return to the Premier League, even with Sheffield United's struggles. The Blades currently sit at the bottom of the table, having lost 15 out of their 20 matches and conceded 49 goals.

Sheffield United interested in Villarreal striker Ben Brereton-Diaz

Aside from their pursuit of Kasper Schmeichel, Sheffield United is also reportedly interested in securing the services of Villarreal striker Ben Brereton-Diaz. The Chile international garnered attention during his time at Blackburn but has struggled to replicate his goalscoring form in Spain. With no goals to his name for Villarreal, Brereton-Diaz may be available on loan, which would provide the Blades with much-needed firepower up front.

Luke Thomas could be sent back to Leicester

Sheffield United may also consider sending defender Luke Thomas back to Leicester City by terminating his season-long loan early. The decision on Thomas's return may depend on the fitness of left-back Max Lowe, who recently sustained a groin injury in training. If Thomas, 22, does return to the Foxes, it would create space for the Blades to make an additional loan signing.
