James Milner reveals why he rejected Gareth Southgates offer to come out of retirement for the 2018 World Cup

Former England midfielder James Milner has opened up about his decision to reject Gareth Southgate's offer to return to the national team for the 2018 World Cup. Milner, who retired from England duty after Euro 2016, explained that he felt it would have been a "bad look" to come out of retirement.

A "bad look"

Milner made the decision to retire from international football after a conversation with then-manager Sam Allardyce. Allardyce had admitted that Milner would be a backup player, and the midfielder wanted to free up a spot for a younger player who could benefit from the experience of being in the squad.

Standing by his decision

When Gareth Southgate took over as manager, he reached out to Milner to see if he would reconsider his retirement. However, the veteran midfielder stood by his decision and declined the offer.

Impressive international career

During his time with the England national team, Milner won 61 caps between 2009 and 2016. He scored one goal and played in two World Cups and two European Championships.

Milner's decision to reject Southgate's offer demonstrates his commitment to his retirement and his desire to give younger players a chance to shine on the international stage.
