Former Premier League goalkeeper, David Stockdale, returns to York City

David Stockdale, the 38-year-old former Premier League goalkeeper, has made a nostalgic return to his first club, York City. Stockdale, who made his debut for York City in 2003, is not only back between the sticks but also serves as the head of recruitment in manager Neal Ardley’s management team.

Stockdale's journey through English football

Stockdale has had an eventful career, playing for 18 clubs (11 on loan) and featuring in each of the top seven tiers of English football. He came close to representing England in 2011 and has made 441 league appearances in the top four tiers, including 59 in the Premier League.

Banished to train with Jude Bellingham at Birmingham

During Stockdale's time at Birmingham in 2017, he was forced to train with the Under-18s as a punishment. It was during this time that he formed a close bond with a young Jude Bellingham, whom Stockdale would pick up and drive to training. Their friendship remains strong to this day.

A nightmare at Birmingham, but a silver lining for Stockdale's family

Stockdale's move to Birmingham turned sour when he was frozen out by manager Garry Monk. Despite the difficulties, Stockdale's daughter was able to excel in her education, thanks to the stability provided by the move. Stockdale eventually took a pay cut to join Wycombe Wanderers.

Reflecting on a fulfilling career

Stockdale's career may have been filled with various clubs, but he values the relationships he has built with teammates and staff members. He believes that being remembered as a decent person is more important than being remembered as a good player.

Almost playing for England

Stockdale came close to earning an England cap during Fabio Capello's reign as manager. Although he didn't get any game time, Stockdale cherishes the experience of training alongside some of England's greatest players.

Appreciating defeat and celebrating others' victories

Stockdale emphasizes the importance of appreciating the efforts of others, even in defeat. He recalls watching Sunderland lift the trophy after Wycombe's play-off final defeat in 2022 and finding joy in seeing his son's tears turn into tears of joy when Sheffield Wednesday won the League One play-off final.

Life outside of football

Outside of his football career, Stockdale is involved in property management and co-owns a local football club. He has also fulfilled a long-standing ambition of improving the facilities for the club, which had previously been playing outside the area with poor facilities.
