Heartbreaking Collision
During an ice hockey game on October 28, Nottingham Panthers player Matt Petgrave's skate accidentally slit the throat of Adam Johnson, a former NHL star playing for Sheffield Steelers. Shocking footage shared on social media captured the moment Petgrave helped Johnson off the ice, his shirt stained with blood.
A Moment of Silence
Returning to the ice for their first home game since Johnson's tragic death, Sheffield Steelers paid tribute to their fallen teammate. Prior to their 2-1 victory against Coventry Blaze, more than 8,000 fans observed a minute of silence, while players banged their hockey sticks on the ice. Matt Petgrave's picture also appeared on the arena's big screen as a sign of unity.
Distraught and Reckless?
The Nottingham Panthers described the collision as a "freak accident" and expressed that Matt Petgrave is "absolutely distraught" over the incident. South Yorkshire Police is conducting a comprehensive investigation into Johnson's death, seeking the assistance of specialized experts. While no wrongdoing has been suggested, Johnson's family believes that Petgrave's actions may have been "reckless."
Grieving aunt Kari Johnson, speaking from her home in Kelly Lake, Minnesota, emphasized that she does not believe Petgrave intended to kill her "amazing" nephew. However, she expressed her concern over Petgrave's reckless actions during the game and called for justice for Adam.
