Arsenal legend Ian Wright has revealed the moment that led to his decision to step down from Match of the Day, the popular BBC football show.
After a long and successful career on the show, Wright, 60, announced on social media that he will be leaving at the end of the season. He first appeared on Match of the Day in 1997 while still a player at Highbury, and has since made several returns to the iconic football program.
Wright expressed his gratitude for the show, stating, "Anyone that knows my story knows how much the show has meant to me since I was a young boy. MOTD is my Holy Grail."
He also mentioned that his decision to leave had been in the works for some time, but that his recent milestone birthday may have "fast-tracked" the process. He added, "Ultimately, it’s time to do a few more different things with my Saturdays."
Wright has been a key part of the Match of the Day team alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer in recent years. Last season, he made history by appearing on the show with his son Shaun Wright-Phillips, becoming the first father-son combination in the show's history.

Head of BBC Sport content Philip Bernie praised Wright's contributions to the show, saying, "His insight, wit and warmth have richly entertained and informed all those watching him. We will miss his unique style and presence."
The news of Wright's departure has been met with emotional messages from his colleagues and fans . Gary Lineker tweeted, "It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to work alongside you, Ian. Farewell my friend," while Alan Shearer promised a big hug in their next meeting.
Various celebrities, including Piers Morgan, also expressed their admiration for Wright's work on the show and his decision to leave on a high note.
Although Wright's departure marks the end of an era for Match of the Day, fans can expect a fitting send-off for the football legend.
