England's Rugby League Test Series with Samoa Could Be Back On

Englands Rugby League Test Series with Samoa Could Be Back On

Rugby League Samoa urged to reconsider decision

England's rugby league Test series with Samoa could be back on the table after Rugby Football League (RFL) chiefs met with the International Rugby League (IRL) board. Samoa had initially backed out of a 2024 tour, but the IRL has called for them to rethink their decision. RFL boss Troy Grant secured a commitment from Rugby League Samoa Executive President Fiu Faaolatane Ponifasio Vasa to restart talks and explore the possibility of successfully touring England next year.

Plans thrown into chaos

Samoa's decision to stay Down Under and participate in the Pacific Championship, funded by the Australian Government, has disrupted England's plans. Although nothing was ever signed, Samoa had indicated to both England and the IRL board that they would travel. However, the preferred option is for them to tour, and declining them a place in the Pacific Championship is one possible consequence if they do not change their mind.

RFL keen to give fans 'meaningful' fixtures

The RFL is eager to provide fans with 'meaningful' fixtures on home soil in 2024. With England set to head to Australia in 2025 and New Zealand the favorite to host the 2026 World Cup, RFL bosses are exploring alternative options if Samoa does not tour. Sending another side, such as Papua New Guinea, to England or having England travel Down Under are among the potential options being considered. However, facing home nations or France may not provide the level of competition desired.

Mid-season Test in June

While a mid-season Test against home nations or France could be a possibility, traveling over the Channel for the June 29th fixture would present logistical challenges. Therefore, the RFL is focused on securing a tour or an alternative fixture that meets the level of competition expected by fans.
