Tragic Accident
A coroner in the UK has called for neck guards to be made mandatory in ice hockey after the death of Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson. Johnson was killed on October 28 when he was struck in the throat by a skate during a game against the Sheffield Steelers. The incident happened in front of 8,000 horrified spectators at Utilita Arena Sheffield.
Coroner's Report
Coroner Tanyka Rawden has written a report stating that there is a risk of future deaths unless action is taken. She believes that neck guards should be worn by all players in order to prevent similar tragedies from occurring. Rawden's report has been sent to Ice Hockey UK and the English Ice Hockey Association Limited, who have 56 days to respond.
Response from Ice Hockey Organizations
The Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) has stated that it will "strongly encourage" players to wear neck guards, but the English Ice Hockey Association has indicated that it will make the protective gear non-negotiable.
Fond Farewell
Adam Johnson's funeral took place in his hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota. His parents described him as a loving and thoughtful person who was cherished by those who knew him. Johnson's fiancée, Ryan Wolfe, also paid tribute to him on social media, saying, "Our sweet Adam, we miss you so much."
