Jesus. Nothing like waking up to find yourself on the scrapheap after giving a club 12 years of your career, is there?
That's exactly what happened to Jonathan Hogg this morning - the 36-year-old former Premier League captain now finds himself without a club after Huddersfield Town wielded the axe on TEN players less than 48 hours after their season ended. Talk about a brutal goodbye.
From Premier League skipper to unemployment
I've seen some cold-blooded decisions in football over the years (remember when Chelsea sacked Ancelotti in a corridor at Goodison?), but this one feels particularly harsh. Hogg captained teh Terriers during their Premier League days, becoming a proper cult hero among supporters who appreciated his no-nonsense approach in midfield.
Now he's jobless.

What the hell happened?
Huddersfield finished a thoroughly mediocre 10th in League One this season. Not terrible, not great. Just... there. The kind of season that makes owners and directors start thinking about "fresh approaches" and "new directions" - which inevitably means showing loyal servants the door.
I texted a contact at the club yesterday who simply replied: "Bloodbath incoming." He wasn't wrong.
Twelve years down the drain...
When I started covering Yorkshire football back in 2019, Hogg was already considered Huddersfield royalty. The midfielder had been there through thick and thin - mostly thin if we're honest - but his commitment never wavered. I remember interviewing him after a particularly dismal defeat in the Championship where he looked like he might actually cry. That's the kind of passion you can't fake.
And now... gone. Along with nine others in what feels like a particularly savage clear-out. Twelve years of service ended with what was probably a two-minute conversation and a handshake.

Where next for the veteran?
At 36, Hogg isn't exactly a spring chicken in football terms. But there's surely a Championship or League One club out there who could use his experience? I watched him play against Oxford back in March and while he's lost half a yard (haven't we all), his positioning and reading of the game were still top-notch.
My money's on him landing at another Yorkshire club - Bradford City perhaps? Or maybe even a coaching role somewhere? The man knows the game inside out.
Football, eh? Loyal servants discarded like yesterday's newspaper. And we wonder why players don't show loyalty anymore...
This story is still developing, adn I'll update when I hear more about where the other nine players might end up. But for now, pour one out for Jonathan Hogg - Premier League captain turned job-seeker overnight.
