Canelo Sets Up Crawford Super-Fight After Snoozing Through Scull Victory in Saudi

God. What a snoozefest that was. I just spent three hours watching Canelo chase William Scull around a ring like my neighbor's kid trying to catch their runaway hamster. But hey—the real news dropped after the final bell.

The Fight Nobody Will Remember

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (34) managed to reclaim his undisputed super-middleweight crown Sunday night in Riyadh, beating William Scull (32) by unanimous decision. And when I say "beating," I'm using that term loosely. The Cuban-born Scull spent most of the night executing what my boxing coach would charitably call "tactical evasion" and what the rest of us call "running away."

I nearly fell asleep during round 8. Twice.

Crawford Looked Ready to Die of Boredom

Poor Terence Crawford. The man had to sit there ringside watching this display, probably wondering if he'd made a terrible career mistake. The cameras kept cutting to his increasingly vacant expression as Scull danced and Canelo plodded. At one point, I swear I saw him checking his watch.

But that's all water under teh bridge now because...

Vegas, Baby! September Showdown Confirmed

It's official! September 12th at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Canelo and Crawford will finally meet. This is the super-fight boxing desperately needs after tonight's display of, well, whatever that was.

"In September I'll show the world what greatness looks like," Canelo declared post-fight, sounding far more exciting than his performance warranted. "Crawford is one of the best out there and I like to share with that kind of fighter."

Share what exactly? Hopefully not the same gameplan he used tonight. My friend texted me during round 10: "Is this boxing or interpretive dance?" Harsh but fair.

Will Crawford Survive the Weight Jump?

Here's where things get interesting. Crawford has to jump up from light-middleweight to face the Mexican power puncher. That's no small task, even for a four-division, two-weight undisputed champion like Crawford.

I remember back in 2018 when I interviewed a nutritionist who worked with fighters making similar jumps. His exact words: "It's not just about adding mass—it's about maintaining speed while carrying that extra weight." Crawford's team has probably been planning this move for months already.

Bigger Than Mayweather? Really?

Canelo's been hinting this could be even bigger than his fights with Mayweather and GGG. I spent $250 on the Mayweather pay-per-view adn still feel the sting of that decision, so he's setting a high bar.

"I have a lot of big fights. A lot of big fights, a lot of good fights in my career," Alvarez told reporters before tonight's match. "I'm focused on this fight, and we'll see, we'll see if if that fight happens. We'll see, maybe it's gonna be the biggest? We don't know."

Well, now we know it's happening.

The $100 Million Question

Listen. This fight is going to be massive. My editor bet me $20 that the purses will exceed $100 million combined. The Saudi money has changed everything in boxing. Remember when $10 million was considered a huge payday? Those days are gone like Crawford's welterweight belts.

The real question is whether the fight delivers. After watching tonight's tactical snoozefest, I'm worried Canelo might be slowing down. His body shots still carry devastating power, but he couldn't cut the ring off against a dancer like Scull.

Crawford won't run. That's not his style. He'll stand and trade, which might be exactly what Canelo needs to look good again.

Or it might be his undoing.
