Arsenal legend Ian Wright announces he is LEAVING Match of the Day after 27 years on BBC show

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has revealed that he will be stepping down from his role as a pundit on Match of the Day.

The end of an era

The 60-year-old made his first appearance on the popular TV show back in 1997, while he was still an active player.

Time for a change

After hanging up his boots, Wright became a regular on Match of the Day, sharing the screen with host Gary Lineker and fellow pundit Alan Shearer.

Last season on MOTD

However, Wright took to social media to announce that this will be his final season on the show. In a statement, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and described the show as his "Holy Grail."

Looking ahead

Wright revealed that he has been contemplating this decision for some time and now wants to explore other opportunities. He expressed his excitement for the upcoming Premier League title race and is looking forward to his last months on the show.

A legendary career

Wright retired from playing in 2000 and began his career as a pundit two years later. He has had two spells on Match of the Day, from 2002-2008 and then from 2015 until now.

A historic moment

In May of this year, Wright made history by appearing alongside his son Shaun Wright-Phillips, becoming the first father and son punditry team on the show.

A fond farewell

Head of BBC Sport content, Philip Bernie, praised Wright's contributions to Match of the Day and promised to give him a proper send-off at the end of the season.

Arsenal's record goalscorer

During his playing career, Wright scored 185 goals for Arsenal, making him the club's record goalscorer at the time. He won numerous titles and accolades during his time at the club.

Wright's departure from Match of the Day marks the end of an era for the popular football show, but fans can still look forward to seeing him explore new ventures in the future.
