Suella Braverman, the UK Home Secretary, is set to address world leaders in the US on Wednesday, urging them to reconsider outdated asylum regulations and take a stronger stand against smuggling gangs. Braverman will highlight Britain's innovative approaches to combating the issue of small boats, and will present a blueprint for other countries to follow suit. This comes as the Home Office reports a complete halt in channel crossings last week, despite a staggering number of 24,000 dinghies making the journey so far this year. The much-awaited Rwanda deportation scheme, however, continues to face delays due to legal challenges, leaving no flights to be expected for months.
Tackling Illegal Migration Globally
During her visit, Suella Braverman will emphasize the unsustainable pressures that illegal migration and mass movement of populations are placing on America, the UK, and Europe. She will question the relevance of international conventions and legal frameworks designed decades ago, in an era dominated by jet travel and smartphones. Braverman aims to engage in discussions with her American counterparts in Washington on this pressing crisis. She warns that failing to address these challenges may undermine the democratic legitimacy of political institutions.
Fighting Online Child Abuse and Drug Epidemics
In addition to her focus on immigration issues, Braverman will also visit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. She plans to gain insights into how the organization is combating online child abuse and battling sick paedophiles. The Home Secretary will also be briefed on the fentanyl epidemic that is wreaking havoc across the US.
