Rishi Sunak Orders Police Chiefs to Prepare for Potential Terrorist Attacks

PM Warns of "Accelerated Terrorism Threat" in the UK

Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has instructed police chiefs to start planning and simulating responses to potential terrorist attacks on UK soil. This comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson raised concerns about an "accelerated terrorism threat" following Israel's defensive war against Hamas. The order was given during an emergency Cobra meeting held at 10 Downing Street.

Security Chiefs Instructed to Mitigate Risk and Prepare for Incidents

During the meeting, security chiefs were directed to "prepare for and mitigate against the risk of incidents" by conducting tabletop exercises to simulate the response to public order and counter-terror scenarios. The goal is to enhance preparedness and ensure an effective response in case of a terrorist attack.

Prosecution Service Urged to Crack Down on Extremists

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) was also urged to take action against extremists who glorify Hamas and engage in antisemitic behavior during pro-Palestine marches. Rishi Sunak emphasized the importance of doing "everything possible" to ensure that those who engage in such activities are held accountable and face appropriate legal consequences.

"Hate Marches" Condemned by Suella Braverman

Home Secretary Suella Braverman strongly condemned the recent protests in central London, describing them as "hate marches." She vowed to tighten anti-terror laws to punish dangerous extremists who operate beneath the criminal threshold. Braverman expressed concern over the tens of thousands of people chanting for the erasure of Israel from the map and emphasized the need for a zero tolerance approach to antisemitism.

Police Investigating Protestors Who Violated Anti-Extremism Rules

Since the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated on October 7, the police have made 100 conflict-related arrests. Metropolitan Police Chief Sir Mark Rowley confirmed that the force is currently identifying further protestors who may have violated anti-extremism rules. He highlighted the increased levels of antisemitism in London's Jewish communities and emphasized the need for vigilance in the face of state threats and terrorism.
