Pupils who question their gender should be treated with appropriate scepticism, say ministers

Pupils who express uncertainty about their gender should be met with "appropriate scepticism," according to government ministers. This statement comes ahead of the expected release of guidance on transgender issues in schools. Oliver Dowden, the Deputy Prime Minister, has emphasized the importance of parental involvement in any decision made by a child regarding their gender identity.

Guidance to provide clarity for parents and teachers

Dowden has stated that the forthcoming guidance, which could be implemented by next summer, will offer clarity to parents and teachers. He believes that parents should be at the forefront of decision-making processes when it comes to children questioning their gender. The aim is to prioritize the safety and well-being of all children.

Rebalancing the approach

Dowden also stressed the need to reassess the current approach and exhibit a healthy level of scepticism towards social transitioning. However, he emphasized the importance of respecting children who find themselves in such situations. The forthcoming guidance will address these issues, ensuring parents and teachers have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities.

Call for prompt release of guidance

Jonathan Gullis, a former education minister and teacher, has urged for the swift release of the guidance. He acknowledges the sensitivity surrounding this topic but feels that the delay in providing guidance has left teachers vulnerable to cancel culture and extreme ideologies.
