PM Urges Evidence in MP Rape Claims

Allegations Spark Investigation into Tory MP

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has addressed the "very serious" allegations of a serial Tory rapist and urged anyone with evidence to come forward and contact the police. This comes after former party chairman Sir Jake Berry reportedly wrote to the police last year accusing an unnamed MP of committing multiple sexual assaults. The Conservative Party is now facing scrutiny over what they knew and what actions were taken in response to these claims.

Conservative Party's Response

When questioned about the allegations, Prime Minister Sunak acknowledged the seriousness of the claims and emphasized that they may be connected to an ongoing police investigation. He stated that the Conservative Party has robust independent complaint procedures in place and encouraged anyone with information or evidence of criminal acts to report it to the police.

Deputy PM Denies Cover-Up

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden has also spoken out in response to the allegations. He denied any cover-up of sex attack allegations during his time as party chairman and emphasized the party's zero tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct. Dowden assured the public that the Conservative Party has an independent complaints mechanism to investigate any allegations.

Letter Raises Concerns

A bombshell letter written by Sir Jake Berry, along with former Chief Whip Wendy Morton, raised concerns about the limited action taken against the alleged serial rapist MP. The letter claimed that up to five victims were subjected to offenses, including multiple rapes, and that the alleged perpetrator was allowed to continue offending. The letter also highlighted the discovery that one of the assault victims had received treatment at a private hospital paid for by the party.

Former Brexit Secretary David Davis commented on the situation, stating that if there had been a cover-up of rape claims, it would be a "criminal offense in its own right." Dowden, when asked about the hospital payments, denied authorizing them.
