Former Health Secretary Sajid Javid: Who is he?

Sajid Javid, the former Health Secretary, played a significant role in Boris Johnson's resignation as Prime Minister. He has held cabinet positions under three prime ministers and was knighted in the 2024 New Year's Honours.

Background of Sajid Javid

Born on December 5, 1969, Sajid Javid is currently 54 years old and has been the Conservative MP for Bromsgrove since 2010. He became Home Secretary in April 2018 following Amber Rudd's departure due to the Windrush scandal. On June 26, 2021, Javid was announced as Matt Hancock's replacement after the Health Secretary's affair with Gina Caladangelo came to light. Javid, one of five sons, was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, and his parents, who moved from Pakistan in the 1960s, settled in Bristol. He attended a state comprehensive school in Bristol and later studied economics and politics at the University of Exeter, where he joined the Conservative party. Before entering politics, Javid worked as a banker in New York, London, and Singapore, earning a salary of £3 million per year as a director at Deutsche Bank. In 2009, he left his banking career to pursue politics and was soon appointed as a junior Treasury minister in David Cameron's government. Javid has also served as Equalities Minister, Culture Secretary, and Business Secretary. In the New Year's Honours in 2024, he was knighted. Javid and his wife Laura have four children.

Javid's Appointment as Health Secretary

Sajid Javid expressed his "honour" at replacing the disgraced Matt Hancock as Health Secretary. In a tweet, he said, "Honoured to have been asked to serve as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care at this critical time. I look forward to contributing to our fight against the pandemic and serving my country from the Cabinet once again." Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor, described Javid as an "excellent choice" for Hancock's replacement.

Resignation and Demand for Boris Johnson's Resignation

Javid resigned as Health Secretary on July 5, 2022, and called for Boris Johnson to step down as Prime Minister. In his resignation letter, Javid criticized the leadership and values represented by Johnson, stating that the public's perception is that the Conservative party is neither popular nor competent in acting in the national interest.
