Tensions Rise as Cabinet Minister and Home Secretary Disagree
A cabinet minister has criticized the Home Secretary, James Cleverly, as tensions continue to grow over the Rwanda asylum plan. Treasury Chief Secretary Laura Trott hit back at Cleverly's comment that the scheme was not "the be-all or end-all".
Support for the Deterrent
Ms. Trott stated that the deterrent was a crucial part of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's border controls, and even the mere threat of it was helping to reduce the number of migrant boats. Sunak himself expressed a willingness to do whatever is necessary to implement the plan, despite it being ruled unlawful by the Supreme Court.
Disappointment in Cleverly's Performance
James Cleverly, who replaced Suella Braverman, was hoped to calm tensions within the Tory party. However, he was labeled "Colonel Calamity" by the right-wing New Conservatives. They wrote to the Prime Minister, urging him to consider all options, including changing human rights laws, to get the Rwanda flights going.
Government Grapples with Net Migration Figures
The government is currently facing challenges related to the high net migration figures, which have reached 750,000. Home Office minister Laura Farris warned that these figures were fueling the rise of neo-Nazis. In response, ministers are considering restrictions on bringing family members to the UK and raising the earnings threshold for entry.
